(Lithuanian: Kauno Rotušė) The most important building in the Town Hall Square is the Town Hall itself. Construction began in 1542. This majestic building embodies the spirit of Gothic, Baroque, and early Classicism. It’s main façade is adorned with a tall, slender tower, rising gracefully into the sky like a swan’s neck. Because of it’s elegant shape and color, the Town Hall is often referred to as the “White Swan.” It’s 53-meter-high tower is the tallest in the Old Town.

Today’s Town Hall is not the first one in Kaunas. The previous one was destroyed in a fire and later rebuilt. Over the centuries, the Town Hall served various purposes: it hosted major city markets and fairs, court sessions, and even housed nine wax-melting furnaces beneath it’s floor. It also functioned as a prison and a storage facility for goods.

Today, the Town Hall is home to a branch of the Kaunas City Museum. It’s collections include exhibits on city history, science and industry, culture and art, sound and image, and archaeology. At the entrance, you can see a wax-melting furnace – a unique example of 15th-century wax processing technology.

As of 2025, the White Hall of the Town Hall once again hosts civil wedding ceremonies, as it traditionally did.
